Montessori Education

This context of learning was created by Maria Montessori in 1907 when the first Children House was created in Rome. The Montessori education allowed children to be independent and the teacher would only intervene if the child needed help or needed to be guided a bit in order for them to get to the next part of the task. I believe this approach to be very effective in encouraging children to be independent and to think for themselves.  This context of learning developed exercises which prepared the children for certain skills. Skills which it prepared children for was reading and writing. These Montessori exercises are very different than those in primary schools. They are especially developed for children to think and improve skills in order for them to accomplish tasks. This context believed in giving children a sense of self-determination and self-realization.

“The child who is “free to move about,” and who perfects himself by so doing, is he who has an “intelligent object” in his movements; the child who is free to develop his inner personality, who perseveres in a task for a considerable time, and organizes himself upon such a fundamental phenomenon, is sustained and guided by an intelligent purpose. When we refrain from guiding the subjugated child step by step, when, liberating the child from our personal influence, we place him in an environment suited to him and in contact with the means of development, we leave him confidently to “his own intelligence.””
This quote is saying that because the teacher is only guiding and lets the child do the task on their own it develops their personal intelligence and allows the child to gain confidence in their own intelligence and won’t need the teacher to help them because they are confident enough to do it themselves.
I believe that there are benefits of the Montessori education some of which include:
·         Gives children a sense of importance of self-expression
·         Children learn from each other as well as the teacher and themselves
·         Learn through own experience
·         Their varieties of learning areas are wide, from cultural aspects to daily living.
·         More of a one on one approach to teaching
·         Each child works at their own pace
However there are also negative aspects of the Montessori Education:
  • They work independently most of the time so don’t have much time to interact with peers
  • Mixed ages
  • Have to use correcting materials to check if their right
In my opinion the Montessori education context of learning is a very unique style allowing children to learn because it allows children to gain self-belief and confidence in the early stage which encourages them to do tasks on their own which will be a major benefit for them in the future. It also allows them to develop skills from the early years and allows them to become more independent. I think the negative aspect of this context of learning is that the children have to work independently and don’t always get a chance to work with fellow pupils and to develop their social development.
